Buss, Fred (1896 - OCT 1918)

The funeral of the late Fred Buss, who died two years ago last month in a military hospital at Bordeaux, France, while in service, of bronchial pneumonia, following an attack of influenza, was held on Tuesday afternoon. The body arrived here (Owen, Clark County, Wis.) on Saturday morning from Chicago and was accompanied by Sergeant Francis of Camp Grant, who remained until after the burial service. Mr. Buss enlisted in the service two years ago last August and after a short training in this county sailed for France and shortly after his arrival was taken ill with influenza, followed by pneumonia, which took his life.

The funeral on Tuesday was held from the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Buss, living four miles east and one-half mile south of Owen, at 1:30 in the afternoon, and the services at the Reformed Church in Curtiss, at 2:30, with Rev. William Haenemann officiating, he speaking in both English and German. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery two mile north of the village of Curtiss (Pine Hill).

The Van Huizen Post, American Legion No. 123 of Owen, had charge of the services at the grave and the body was accompanied by an armed military guard, made up of members of the Owen and Curtiss Legion Posts. A salute was fired and as the body was lowered to the grave, "taps" were sounded. The casket was covered with the American flag, which had accompanied the body here from its resting place in France.

Mr. Buss was 24 years of age at the time of his death, and is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Buss, two brothers and two sisters, all of who were present at the funeral.
