Nowak, John (1887 - 21 Mar 1922)
The palling effect of the news of tragic death was seen in our city last Tuesday evening when it became known that John Nowak had been accidentally killed while at work on the log landing at the saw mill. His sudden extinction of life came in the form of a log from a jam at which he was working. With an axe he was trying to chop loose the key log in the pile, and he had proceeded part way in his work when the accident occurred. The logs started rolling and sliding, and the avalanche was so sudden that the man could not run. One large birch log catapulted toward him and in a fraction of a second he had been struck endwise by the log, his head and neck being pinned between it and another one near at hand. Crushing injury to neck and chest was done, and his death was instantaneous.
He was hurriedly taken to the doctor's office, where death was pronounce. No inquest was necessary and his body was then removed to the undertaker's, where it will remain until taken to Stanley tomorrow for funeral services and interment.
John Nowak, who was nearly 35-years-ol, is survived by his wife and four children who reside here (Owen, Clark County, Wis.). Other relatives and friends from out of the city have been here to join with friends in Owen to offer the sorrow family condolences.
