Owen, Frank G. (1887? - 26 JUN 1922)

Word was received here Monday of the death of Frank Gilchrist Owen, son of John S. Owen of Eau Claire, and a brother of A. R. Owen of this city (Owen, Clark County, Wis.). Mr. Owen, who was in Chicago on business, occupied a room at the Congress Hotel with his uncle, Samuel Owen, of Portland, Oregon. He and his uncle, S. F. Owen, and Gunder E. Anderson of this city, played cards in S. F. Owen's room until after one o'clock, when all retired. S. F. Owen awakened shortly afterwards to discover Frank's bed was vacant. Mr. Owen then went to the room of Mr. Anderson, four floors higher up in the building, thinking that Frank was there, and when not located they called the office to seek his whereabouts. Before information could be gotten from the office, word reached Mr. Anderson and Mr. Owen that a man had fallen from the fifth story window of the hotel. It was known that he had attack of heart trouble and it is though probable that in an effort to obtain air when suffering with an attack that he fell. He was immediately taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he died. The body was sent to Eau Claire on Monday. He leaves a wife and two children, residing at Medford, Oregon.

Frank Owen was born at Eau Claire about thirty-five years ago, and grew to manhood there, later coming to this city, where he had charge of certain branches of the lumbering business of the John S. Owen Lumber Co. He was a director of the corporation and about ten years ago went to the Pacific coast, where he was engaged in the lumber business. He was an unusually genial and likeable young man and his many friends here will be grieved to learn of his untimely death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at Eau Claire, and those from here who will attend are Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Owen, son and daughter, John and Elizabeth; Edward A. Owen, G. E. Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Kidd.

The coroner's jury at Chicago, after investigating the death of Mr. Owen, returned a verdict of accidental death due to shock and injuries.

The principal witnesses at the hearing were S. F. Owen of Portland, Oregon, uncle of Frank Owen, and G. E. Anderson of this city, a personal friend.

(Additional Note provided by granddaughter)

On your web page for the name Owen, Frank Gilchrist, you have listed only my AUNT (Shelby Owen) as the only child of Frank Gilchrist Owen and Leila Lane Shelby Owen. You have NOT listed their OTHER daughter, Barbara Owen, who was my mother and was my Aunt Shelby's older sister. (Both are deceased now.) It is very frustrating to me that on every website I search for information about my grandmother, Leila Lane Shelby, my mother is NEVER MENTIONED! Trust me - I am telling you the truth. I have copies of my grandmother's Last Will and Testament, in which I - her grand-daughter - am named, as well as all 4 of my sisters (including my sister Leila and my sister Shelby who were named for her). PLEASE ADD BARBARA OWEN as the first daughter of Frank Gilchrist Owen and Leila Lane Shelby Owen (my mother). She was born February 28th 1914 and died on March 26, 1995 in Medford Oregon. Thank You!
