Bryan, Leona B. (15 September 1912 – 16 February 1984)
Leona B. Bryan, 71, Rt. 2 Neillsville, died Thursday, February 16, at
Neillsville Memorial Hospital following a lingering illness.
Mrs. Bryan was born September 15, 1912, in Ossian, Iowa, to George and Florence
(Weitgenant) Broihier. Her family moved to the Town of Levis when she was a
young child. After her education in Levis she was married to George Bryan,
February 6, 1929, in Neillsville. The couple farmed in Levis for many years. She
later also worked for Neillsville Memorial Hospital for many years. She was
active in the Assembly of God Church and its Women’s Ministerial Society.
She is survived by her husband, George; five daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Viola)
Larson and Mrs. Don (Susan) Guetschow, both of Beloit, Judy Bryan of Augusta,
Me., Mrs. Ronald (Jean) Yankee of Round Lake, Ill., and Mrs. Joseph (Bonnie)
Ferraro of Rockford, Ill.; eight sons, John Bryan of Glen Rock, Wyo., and
Robert, Wayne, Dean, Donald, Delwin, Joseph and David Bryan, all of Neillsville;
46 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. David (Mabel)
Bender of Granton and Mrs. Faye Wasserberger of Neillsville. She was preceded in
death by her parents; one son, George, Jr., and one sister, Lorene.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 20, at the Assembly of God Church,
with the Rev. Lloyd Hohn officiating. Burial Was at Dells Dam Cemetery,
Neillsville.

Cox, Lucille Lu (? – 4 March 1984)
Former Greenwood resident, Lucille Lu Cox, 85, Oaklawn, Illinois died at her
home Sunday, March 4, of an apparent heart attack. Cox left Greenwood in the
fall of 1977 after the death of her husband.
She had resided in Oaklawn with her son, Donald, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Cox had
resided on Andrew Street in Greenwood. She is survived by two sons, Don, Jr., of
Oaklawn and Jack of Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter, Mrs. Norman (Esther) Kulas
of Palatine, Illinois; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, March 7, at the Mueller Funeral
Home in Oaklawn. The burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.

Crothers, Elizabeth (31 July 1894 – 18 February 1984)
Elizabeth Crothers, 89, Neillsville Memorial Home, died Saturday, February 18,
at Neillsville Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Crothers was born July 31, 1894, in the Town of Pine Valley to Herbert and
Elizabeth (Williams) Quinnell. She attended schools in Pine Valley and was
graduated from Neillsville High School. She attended college at Stevens Point
and Whitewater. She then taught schools in the Neillsville, Three Lakes and
Drummond areas for several years.
She was married in 1921 in Neillsville to Donald Crothers. The couple farmed in
Pine Valley for many years. She was a member of the Neillsville school board for
many years, serving as treasurer for several years.
After the death of her husband in 1952, Crothers moved to Neillsville. She had
entered the nursing home several years ago due to failing health. She was a
member of the United Church of Christ and the Order of Eastern Star Carmi
Chapter No. 60. She was active in the Neillsville Grey Ladies and the
Neillsville Hospital Auxiliary for many years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 21, at the United Church of Christ,
Neillsville, with Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Lori Anding sang accompanied by
Eileen Zank. The hymns sung were “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” and “The
Twenty-Third Psalm.”
Her burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery, and pallbearers were
Charles Neff, Fred Vornholt, Gary Corey, Art Drescher, Kenneth Olson and Delbert
Struble. Funeral arrangements were made by Gesche Funeral Home.
People attending from out of town included Mr./Mrs. James Silverberg, Milwaukee;
Dr./Mrs. John O’Meara, Durand; Mr./Mrs. Kenneth Lane and Ed Crothers, all of
Minneapolis, Mn., and Mr./Mrs. Kevin Gaddis, Withee.

Haselow, Erwin C.(20 June 1905 - 1984)
Operator of the Haselow Hardware Store in Chili for 42 years, Erwin C. Haselow,
78, Chili, died Saturday March 3, at his home of an apparent heart attack.
Haselow was born June 20, 1905, in Spokeville, to the late William and Bertha
(Bloedow) Haselow. He received his education in Spokeville schools. He worked in
the area until 1929 when he moved to Chili, where he operated the hardware store
until he retired in 1971.
He was married to Dorothy Portz on October 23, 1929, in Chili. She died in in
1971. On July 21, 1975, he was married to Dorothy Hacker, in Beaver Dam. He was
a member of Immanuel where he taught Sunday School for 45 years. He was also a
member of the Gideon Society, The Chili Volunteer Fire Department, the Clark
County Cancer Board and the Cloverbelt Baseball Association. He was active in
4-H Club work in the Chili area for many years.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Kenneth Haselow of Rolling Meadows,
Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. R.C. (Mary Ellen) Reitz, Marshfield and Mrs.
William (Barbara) Townsend of Madison; four stepchildren, Mrs. Dan (Rosalie)
Calawerts, Walter Hacker, Mrs. Alan Iida) Laubenstein and Robert Hacker, all of
Green Bay; 10 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and a brother, E.H. Haselow
of Owen. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 6, at Immanuel United Church of Christ
in Chili, the Rev. Frank Hinebaugh officiating. Dolores Wolf was the organist
and Harland and Lavern Meissner were the singers.
The burial was made at the parish cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Frank
Storm, George LaGrander, Otto Rusch, Herbert Puscheck, Victor Montag and Wayne
Booth. Active pallbearers were Elmer Steffen, Jerry Welch, Irwin Rusch, Lawrence
Behling, Philip Schilling and Donovan Spry. The Hansen Funeral Home, Marshfield,
was in charge of arrangements.

Heinze, Ralph S. (2 March 1909 – 22 February 1984)
Ralph S. Heinze, Spencer, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, Wednesday,
February 22. He was born March 2, 1909, in the Town of Fremont to Fred and Edith
(Prust) Heinze. He was married to Selma Riedel on June 28, 1929, at Mapleworks
Church of Granton.
He was owner-operator of the Nasonville Tavern for 27 years. He worked for a
number of years at Spencer Funeral Home-Jasperon and Rux, B&W farm sales in
Marshfield and H & S Manufacturing of Marshfield. He retired from H & S in
October 1983. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Spencer.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Nancy) Bauer of Wilton;
nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three brothers, Floyd of Marshfield,
Oscar of San Fernando, Calif., and Clarence of Utah; and Three sisters, Mrs.
Florence Spuhler, of Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Norman (Berte) Haack of Wausau and
June Hildebrandt of Marshfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and one
sister, Verna Haack.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church,
Spencer, with the Rev. William Ruhbusch officiating with burial at the Lynn
cemetery. The pallbearers were grandsons, Bill, Mike, Roger, Rick, Jim and Dan
Bauer. The organist was Mrs. Arnold Bruesewitz, with singers Mrs. William
Ruhbusch, Lisa Ruhbusch, Mrs. Daniel Schwantes and Mrs. Ernst Krause. The Rux
Funeral Home, Spencer, was in charge of arrangements.

Krause, Edward (25 October 1911 – 21 February 1984)
Edward Krause, 72, Granton, died Tuesday, February 21, at Neillsville Memorial
Hospital.
Krause was born October 25, 1911, in The Town of Grant. He farmed in Town of
Grant until moving to Granton in the fall of 1976. He was married on July 25,
1937, in Granton to Esther Brohelden. She died in 1965.
Krause is survived by four brothers, Oscar, Carl and Martin A., all of Granton,
and Reinhold of Marshfield and one sister, Mrs. Hilda Holt of Neillsville. He
was preceded in death by his wife, one son, one daughter and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 24, at Zion American Lutheran
Church, Town of Grant, the Rev. Maynard Stokka officiating, with burial made at
the parish cemetery. The Gilbertson Funeral Home of Granton was in charge of
arrangements.

Krause, Martin (8 September 1892 – 14 February 1984) With Flag
Martin C. Krause, 91, Rt. 1 Granton, died Tuesday, February 14, at his home. He
was a veteran of WWI. He was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church in the
Town of Grant.
He was born in the town of Lynn, September 8, 1892, and received his education
there. He had farmed in the town of Lynn his entire life. He was married to Anna
Kampin on April 8, 1919. She died in 1978.
Mr. Krause is survived by his sister, Mrs. Edward (Agnes) Ure of Marshfield. He
was preceded in death by his wife, one son, three brothers and four sisters.
Graveside services were held February 17, at Zion American Lutheran Church
Cemetery with the Rev. Maynard Stokka officiating. The Gilbertson Funeral Home
of Granton was in charge of arrangements.

Schley, Don (29 October 1907 – 21 February 1984)
Don Schley, 76, Town of Green Grove, Owen, died Tuesday, February 21, at Victory
Memorial Hospital of Stanley.
He was born October 29, 1907, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Fred and Myrtle (Houf)
Schley. He graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1927. He was married
to Hazel Loy on January 7, 1931, in Waukegan.
He had lived in Waukegan and Wadsworth, Illinois, where he worked for U.S. Steel
and farmed. He moved in 1946 to Green Grove where he farmed and worked in recent
years for the National Farmers Organization at the Curtiss Collection point.
Schley is survived by his wife, one son, William of Owen, two daughters, Mrs.
Bernard (Donna) Tabbert and Mrs. Gerald (Nancy) Salmela, both of Waukegan; 10
grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one sister, Alma Lewis of Homewood,
Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 24, at the Maurina Funeral Home in
Owen, with the Rev. Peter Thomsen officiating with burial at Dells Dam Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Robert Loy, Ed Rohland, Al Rohland, Emil Rohland,
Harry Dempsey, Herb Zimmerman and Harvey Weideman.

Thiemke, Leona B. (24 October 1914 – 12 February 1984)
Former Neillsville area resident, Lona B. Thiemke, 69, Marshfield, died of
cancer Sunday, February 12, at Edgewater Haven Nursing Home in Port Edwards. She
had resided there since September 27, 1983, and had been ill the past six
months.
She was born October 24, 1914, in St. Mary’s Ridge to the late John and Cecelia
(Evalt) Hemmersbach, and attended schools there. In 1923, she moved to the
Neillsville area with her parents and continued her education there. The family
later moved to the Vesper area.
She was married to Roy W. Thiemke on October 23, 1934, in Bakerville. The couple
farmed in the Granton area, moving to Marshfield in 1955. She was employed at
St. Joseph’s Hospital from 1959 until her retirement. Her husband died in 1978.
She continued to live in Marshfield before entering the nursing home. She was a
member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the PCCW.
She is survived by one son, Leroy Thiemke of Marshfield; three daughters, Mrs.
Henry “Dick” (Joan) Elmhorst and Mrs. Richard (Carol) Triplat, both of Rudolph,
and Mrs. William (Virginia) Elmhorst of Neillsville; 27 grandchildren; 10 great
grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence (Mary) Mayer of Stratford, Mrs.
Anna Arndt of Marshfield and Mrs. Regina Welch of Abbotsford. She was preceded
in death by her husband, a son John and a daughter Margie, who both died in
infancy; and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 15, at St. John’s, with the Rev.
Donald F. Wilger officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wesley provided the music. The
burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
The pallbearers were grandsons and other relatives, Billy, Joe, Jon, Nick and
Brian Elmhorst, Roger Mand and Mike Weidman. Rembs-Kundinger Funeral Homes,
Marshfield, was in charge of arrangements.

Volz, Lester (9 January 1922 – 20 February 1984) With Flag
Native of the Neillsville area, Lester H. Volz, 62, Janesville, died Monday,
February 20, at his home.
Mr. Volz was born January 9, 1922, in the Town of Washburn to Robert and Velmer
(Linton) Volz. He was educated in the Neillsville area and worked there until he
entered the service. A WWII veteran, Volz served in the U.S. Army from June 1942
to August 1945. He was a sergeant in the armored battalion and served in Europe,
Africa and the Middle East. After the service, Volz returned to Neillsville
where he worked until 1953.
He then moved to Black River Falls where he worked for the Janesville Auto
Transport Co. of Janesville. About 10 years ago, he moved to Janesville where he
continued to work for the company until his death.
Volz is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Wheelock of Grafton; two
grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Stanley (Delores) Rosenthal of Wis. Rapids,
Mrs. John (Marcella) Adams of San Pablo, Calif., Mrs. William (Florence) Kopp of
Cambridge and Mrs. Roger (Iva Lou) Northup of Mundelein, Ill.; and six brothers,
George and Harry, both of Wis. Rapids, Wilbur of Orland, Calif., Gerald of City
Point, Willis of Neillsville and Raymond of Waukesha. He was preceded in death
by his parents.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 24, at Gesche Funeral Home, with
Rev. Gary Clark officiating, with burial was made in the Neillsville City
Cemetery.
