Monday, John Paulus, mine host of the O’Neill, and Joe Dillman, the host of the Merchants hotel were fined for allowing card playing for drinks, etc, in their hotels as against the wishes of a few of the aldermen. They appeared in the police court later in the day and John Paulus was fined $6.00 and costs, $7.35 or $13.35. It cost Joe Dillman $25.00 fine and the cost of $10.90, or $35.90 for the round trip. Paulus plead guilty to the charges and Dillman fought the case and lost.
