Le Roy Weinke recently opened a sport shop at Route 1, Colby. The shop known as Le Roy’s Sport Shop, will have Mercury outboard motors, Alum Craft boats and Bulko Trailers for sale. Weinke will also stock the parts plus do small engine repair.

Bio: Nyole “Bunk” Creed Honored in Scouting (Jul 1976)

Nyole “Bunk” Creed, Unity, has been in scouting a long time he says. He was a Scout himself when he was a boy, and a Scoutmaster back in the 1930’s. The troop broke up after a while, but he got back into it in the early 40’s, when his son Bill and Bill’s friends wanted to become Scouts. Because Bunk is a very special Scouter, the Samoset Council’s 1976 Round-Up started this month has been dedicated to him.

Creed, a Scoutmaster for over 15 years, now works in the Ojibway District and Samoset Council as a unit commissioner. Before retiring from his job as Postmaster in Unity, he used to have the Unity, Colby, Abbotsford, Spencer and Stratford areas to cover. But now he covers only Spencer and Stratford.

He said scouting had changed over the years, it encourages and trains the boys to be leaders rather than just following the adult leaders as in the past.

Bunk has worked with many young boys in his 35 plus years in scouting, including Jerry Zygowicz, Colby. Bunk said Zygowicz is the first person in the Ojibway District to receive the Woodbadge beads for completing his woodbadge training.

When Bunk presented him with his Woodbadge beads recently, Zygowicz asked him if he would please pin his son Keith’s Scout Badge on him, as Bunk did for him over 20 years ago.

One of Bunk’s fond memories is when he took one of the troops out overnight. He said there usually was an initiation for new Scouts called the “Snipe Hunt.” The scouts would take a boy out in the woods and given him a gunny sack. He was told to wait at a certain spot while the other boys said they would chase snipers to him to put in the sack, and he was to carry them back to camp.

On this particular occasion, Bunk Said, the new Scout came back to camp shortly because he said he was tired of waiting for a snipe. Eventually the other boys came back thinking the new Scout was still out in the woods holding the bag. Bunk lighted when he said the Scouts were really surprised when they came back and there was the new boys sitting beside him by the camp fire.

Bunk said he finds scouting rewarding when men come back to town and tell him how scouting has had a positive influence on their lives.

According to the latest Samoset Council’s brochure, it stated Bunk’s life has been devoted to heling young people, and he stands for the very highest aims of scouting.

He is the holder of several high awards, including the Order of the Arrow, given for doing more than is expected; the Souter’s Key, Distinguished Service Award and the Silver Beaver.

Michael L. Cook, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, is the winner of the 1976 $1,000 Nourse Award offered each years by the American Institute of Cooperation (AIC), Washington, D.C.

Cook is receiving this award, named one of the founders of the AIC, for his doctoral dissertation at the University of Wisconsin, Madison on “An Economic and Legal Analysis of Farmer Cooperative Equity Capital Redemption Policies.”

Cook, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roderick L. Cook, local Unity businessman, has his B.A., M.S, and PHD degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

This award was presented to Cook on July 27, 1976 at AIC’s annual National Institute on Cooperative Education, held this year at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University at Blacksburg.

In his current position at New Mexico State University, Cook teaches course on agricultural product marketing and marketing research, and is currently doing research in a number of agricultural product marketing areas. One of his current research projects involves investigating cooperative cotton gin over-capacity adjustment problem in the Southwest.

Earlier experience included acting as marketing representative and doing public relations work with Tenneco, serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uruguay for two years, and working with a bank in Mexico City.

Recently a family reunion was held by the family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Habeck at Cherokee Park on Sunday. A picnic dinner and supper were served.

Three decorated cakes graced the table, on in observance of the family reunion, on in honor of the engagement of Steve Justman, Unity, and Linda Cherney, Route 2, Marathon, the other commemoration of our nation’s 200th birthday.

Families attended from Colby, North Carolina, Wauwatosa, Canada, Oshkosh, Unity, Burlington, Stevens Point. Clintonville, Manitowoc, Marshfield and Marathon.
