Novak, Marianna "Mary" - Mrs. Martin (1886 - 21 Oct 1926)
Fire originating from the frying of lard and honey on the kitchen stove in the home of Mrs. Martin Novak, eight miles northeast of the city (Owen, Clark County, Wis.), Thursday evening about six o'clock, caused her death and the complete destruction of the farm home and all of its contents.
Mrs. Novak was in the act of frying some lard and honey, with which to do some baking, when the lard caught fire and rapidly spread to her clothing, and before she could put the flames out she had been badly burned about the face and entire body.
Her husband, who had gone to the barn a few minutes before to do the evening chores, did not notice the fire until he had left the barn to go to the house, when he saw his wife fighting the flames from her body. He immediately rushed into the house and tried to get his wife out of the burning building, and after he had succeeded in getting her out of doors she ran back into the fire, according to his story, and then he dragged her out again. Her burns were so severe that she died within ten minutes.
The home with its entire contents was burned to the ground before neighbors arrive on the scene to help.
Funeral services for Mrs. Novak were held Monday, the body being taken to the Catholic Church at Lublin (Taylor Co., Wis.) and burial was made in the cemetery at that place.
