Andersen, Jens (20 DEC1848 - 24 Feb 1927)

Jens Andersen was born in Denmark, Dec. 20, 1848. When he was but a young lad his father passed away, and as he was one of the oldest of a large family, much of the burden fell on his shoulders.

On April 26, 1874, he was joined in holy matrimony to Nielsine F. Hansen. They emigrated to America the same year and settled at Washington Island, Wis., where he followed his trade, that of blacksmith, for twenty-two years. During that time he also developed a fine farm. In 1896 they moved to Withee, Clark County, Wis., where they settled on a wild piece of land 3 1/4 miles northwest of the village, which he transformed into one of the finest dairy farms in the community. He was always progressive and raised a fine herd of pure-bred Guernsey cattle.

He was prominent in public affairs, having held several responsible positions such as town Treasurer, school clerk, president of the Withee Cooperative Creamery Co., etc. He was also instrumental in bringing about the first cow testing association at Withee, and the Clark County Guernsey Breeders' Association.

In 1910 he sold a half interest in the farm and after sold the other half interest to his son, but he continued to live on the place until he was called to the great beyond from whence no traveler ever returns. He had been failing in health for several months until he passed away on Feb. 24, 1927, at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hans K. Andersen.

He leaves to mourn his loss eight children, thirty-six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, one brother and several sisters. The children are Mrs. Christ Nesol, Washington Island, Wis.; Mrs. Elmer Cornell, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. S. C. Madsen, Menomonie, Mich.; Mrs. N. L. Nielsen, Racine, Wis.; Mrs. O. H. Nielsen, Alden, Minn.; Mrs. Peter Jensen, Withee, Wis., Robert Andersen, Pullman, Wash.; and Mrs. E. W. Christensen, Marinette, Wis.

Those from out of town who came to the funeral were Mrs. Elmer Cornell, Chicago; Mrs. S. C. Madsen, Menomonie, Mich.; Mrs. E. W. Christensen, Marinette, Wis.; Simon and Peter Jorgensen, Hutchinson, Minn.
