Puro, Katie M. (1919 - 13 JUN 1927)
Katie Milida Puro, the seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Puro, residing northeast of the city (Owen, Clark County, Wis.), was burned to death Monday afternoon, when her clothes caught fire from lighted matches with which she had been playing.
The child, in company with her sister, had gone to the home of her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Makonen, a short distance from their home, to play with the children at that place early in the afternoon. After playing some time about the house they went to a pasture nearby where they found small piles of brush, and securing some matches began to light fire to the brush piles.
In doing this the child's clothes caught fire and she was badly burned from stocking tops to her head. The children playing with her, after seeing her afire, ran to the house to tell her aunt, but before she could get to the child her clothing was entirely burned off.
Medical aid was summoned at once, and the child was given all help that was possible, but because of the severe burns about the body and face, she passed away that evening at about nine o'clock. Because of the burns being so deep in the flesh, she did not suffer much pain, and was conscious up until a few minutes before she died.
Funeral services took place this afternoon from the Finnish Church, Rev. Terva of Ironwood, Mich., officiating, with burial in Riverside Cemetery.
