Staves, William (22 Feb 1836 - 12 JUN 1885)
William Staves, an old resident well known to our elder citizens, was born Feb. 22, 1836, in England; came to this country while yet a boy and later drifted to Wisconsin, where the tide of immigration was then setting. By occupation a stone mason, he worked at his trade and later engaged in the mercantile business at Kingston, Wis. He enlisted in the civil war and served his country for three years in the Third Wis. Cavalry. He was prominent if the affairs of Garden Valley, where he settled, and held many school and other offices of trust. He died June 12, 1885. His wife, formerly Miss Ellen Stallard, is still a resident of our village (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.). He left three children, all of whom are known to many of our readers and still reside in our vicinity.
