Wise, Samuel A. (14 Feb 1838)

Samuel A. Wise, one of Humbird, Clark County, Wis.'s most public spirited citizens, was born in Franklin Co., Ind., Feb. 14, 1838, and came to Wisconsin in 1864, settling in Houghtonburg; remaining there about ten years and then came to town. From 1887 to 1901 he conducted a mercantile business in the Grange building. Mr. Wise's wife was Lois H. Bently before their marriage. Mr. Wise has had two children, one living. He thinks our reawakening is due to the accumulation of capital and that the future would be prosperous, but a manufacturing plant is needed. He gives the town credit for following: 1. Good churches; 2. Good high school; 3. Our fraternal orders and the sociability of the people/ 4. Morality among all its inhabitants; 5. Abundance of harvest gathered from the soil in and around Humbird; 6. Improvements upon the streets. Comparing, he says, "As far as I know, Humbird is equal with and in some cases better than other small towns.
