RETIRED BUSINESSMAN DIES OF HEART AILMENT

Joseph S. Bogumill, one of the leading and respected citizens of the village of Thorp, passed away of heart disease at the hospital at Chippewa Falls on Wednesday, July 30, 1941. He had reached the age of seventy-six years.

Mr. Bogumill had many friends who will deeply mourn his passing. His was a generous nature, ever willing to lend a helping hand or a bit of sound advice to his less informed countrymen.

The attendance of our citizens at the funeral and the profusion of floral offerings but partly signified the high esteem in which he was held.

He was born in Pozen, Poland, on March 19, 1865. He came to America in 1882 and located in Galitzen, Pennsylvania. There he was united in marriage to Mary Younkins on June 21, 1887. He moved to Thorp with his wife and family in the year 1891 locating on forty acres of land in the Town of Thorp, which he cleared, improved and acquired more land. He farmed there for thirteen years before purchasing a store and an eighty-acre farm of Frank Switalski located three miles east of Thorp. This he operated for six years and then moved to Thorp village where he became engaged in the mercantile business, later taking his sons as partners and building what is now known as the Farmer's Store.

Mr. Bogumill was active in civic affairs serving as supervisor and a school board member in the Towns of Thorp and Withee during his residence there and also village trustee for a number of years. He also served as a director of the Farmers' Exchange Bank.

He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father, successful in providing his eleven children with the advantages of an advanced education and keeping the family circle intact. Mr. and Mrs. Bogumill celebrated their golden wedding anniversary four years ago.

He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and also the Polish National Alliance, being a charter member of the local group. A large number of the members of the organization of Thorp and Gilman attended the funeral services in a body, paying their last respects to him who had received the distinction of being twice decorated by the head of the Alliance for his patriotic activities in 1934 and 1940.

Last rites were conducted by Rev. A. M. Muckerheide at St. Bernard's Church at 9:00 o'clock Monday morning, Aug. 4th, interment being made in the parish cemetery.
