Homer Downer, one of the early settlers of Clark County, passed away at his home in Granton Sunday evening February 15, 1925. He had been in ill health for about four years from hardening of the arteries.

Homer Downer was born in St. Lawrence County, New York, November 24, 1856. He came with his parents to Clark County in the fall of 1864. They settled on a farm in the Town of York where he grew to manhood. On June 7, 1884, he was married to Miss Minnie Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thode Davis and resided for many years on the farm in York. Mr. Downer combined his work on the farm with work in the lumber woods for a good many years and did his share in the pioneer work of this county. He was a man of genial personality and had friends everywhere. For the past number of years he has lived in the village of Granton.

Mr. Downer is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. R. R. Rath and Mrs. H. E. Schoengarth, and by two grandchildren. He leaves also one brother, Noble Downer of the Town of York, twin sisters, Mrs. Frank Converse of the Town of York and Mrs. Carrie Holmes of Neillsville.

The funeral will be held this, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home in Granton, Rev. G. W. Longenecker, of Neillsville officiating, and a quartet of singers from Neillsville furnishing the music. The pall bearers are Charles Neinas, E. A. Beeckler, H. J. Pietenpol, H. E. Williams, T. F. Lee and George Rose.

The death of Mr. Downer marks the passing of another of the pioneers who wrought upon the foundations of this county. Each year sees their number diminishing. Their work is worthy of more than passing notice by those who fall heir to their labors of those early days. We owe much to them, and should honor their memory.
