Gorbeck, Jerome (17 Apr 1833 - 6 Augl 1916)

Mr. Jerome Gorbeck died Sunday, Aug. 6, 1916, after a short illness of cerebral hemorrhage. The end came peacefully at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Math. Brandstedter, in Altoona, where he has made his home for the past two years.

Mr. Gorbeck was born April 17, 1833, in Bregenz, Austria. His childhood days were spent in his fatherland and at the age of thirty years he came to America. Since coming to this country, the grater part of his life has been spent in this vicinity (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.). Forty-three years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Julia Taberski of Humbird.

There are mourning the death of a beloved and indulgent father, four sons, Frank of Thompson, N. D., Edward, Leo and Albert of this vicinity; and four daughters, Mrs. Morrison of St. Paul, Mrs. Rogers of Grand Forks, Mrs. Brandstedter of Altoona, and Miss Martha Gorbeck of Minneapolis. He is also survived by two sisters, one brother, and three grandchildren.

When this section of the country was undeveloped, Mr. Gorbeck, then a young man in the prime of life, came to make it his home. Here he labored with the others, and lived to see it converted from a tangled wilderness into a land dotted with happy, prosperous homes. His home was an ideal one, and a hearty welcome was always extended a visitor there. As advancing age came to him, he relinquished the farm work to his sons, and two years ago went to Altoona to live with his daughter. However, the old farm was always "home" to him and while able he made frequent visits here.

The remains were brought to this village Wednesday noon and were taken to his former home to await burial. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Church, Fairview, Thursday morning, and were attended by a large number of friends, who assembled to pay their last to their former neighbor and townsman. The burial was in the family lot in the cemetery at the church.
