Senior Master Sergeant George L. Himes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Himes of Rt.
1, Owen, Wisconsin, is a member of the Offutt AFB, Nebraska, unit which has
received the Air Force Association’s Citation of Honor for a “decade of
excellence.”
Sergeant Himes is a space systems command and control equipment superintendent
with Offutt’s 4000th Aerospace Applications Group, which received the award for
maintaining an operational effectiveness rate of more than 99 percent over the
past ten years.
The primary mission of the 4000th is to monitor and operate orbiting Defense
Meteorological Satellite Program Spacecraft, which gather global weather data
for tri-service use.
The group has supported many defense operations with satellite picture,
including Mayaguez vessel recovery from Cambodia in May 1975.
The sergeant, a 1955 graduate of Owen High School, attended River Falls,
Wisconsin College and the University of Southern Mississippi., Hattiesburg,
Miss. His wife, Valerie, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Fritz of Owen.
