Schumacher, John (30 JUN 1838 - 14 Feb 1920)
John Schumacher was born in Germany in 1838, and spent his boyhood there. In 1865, he was married to Marie Alwardt, and in 1869 they sailed for this country, having made up their minds to raise their family in a free country. They arrived in Watertown, Wis., with two sick sons, both of whom died in the same hour and were buried in one grave.
They resided in Watertown until 1883, when they came to Humbird and bought a farm east of town. About thirteen years ago they came to town to spend their old age, but after only one short years his helpmate was taken on April 27, 1908. Since that time he has made his home amongst his children.
Mr. Schumacher died at the home of this son Bert, near Fairchild, on Feb. 14, 1920, after but a few days illness, in which time he never complained of any suffering, and almost without warning he went to sleep to awaken where troubles are no more. He was 81 years, 7 months and 14 days of age.
Deceased is survived by six sons and daughters: Mrs. Carl Jankowsky and John H. of Merrill; Mrs. Ed Zillmer and Bert of Fairchild; Mrs. George Barkley and Ernest of Humbird. He leaves also to mourn his death a number of grandchildren and a large circle of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Reformed Church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Grether, and burial was in the Mentor Cemetery.
