Thawing of frozen water pipes early Friday morning resulted in a fire which
destroyed the modern barn of Arthur Swenson at Longwood (Clark Co., Wis.).
About 7:00 a.m. Mrs. Swenson took a blow torch to thaw out the water pipes and
the barn caught fire from the torch. Neighbors were called but the fire gained
headway too fast to be stopped.
The large basement barn, equipped with running water, electric lights and other
modern appliances, burned to the ground. Stored in the barn was machinery and
two mows of hay which was burned. A calf and number of chickens were also burned
to death, but all other livestock was released. The loss is partly covered by
insurance.
