Grutzik, Virginia A. (23 SEP 1922 - 5 MAY 2014)

Virginia A. Grutzik, 91, Marshfield, formerly of Neillsville and City Point, died on Monday, May 5, 2014, at the House of The Dove, Marshfield, under Ministry Home Care Hospice. She fought a brave battle with kidney dialysis for more than six years.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, May 9, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, Pittsville. Rev. Bob Nelson officiated. Burial was in Spaulding Cemetery, City Point. Pallbearers were James Schonke Jr., Austin Dix, Guy Dupee, Dustin Dupee, Kevin Hyde and Phoenix Hyde. Honorary pallbearer was Wyland Hyde.

The eldest of 15 children, Virginia Bentzler was born on Sept. 23, 1922, in Loyal, to George and Leona (nee Schweiger) Bentzler. She was known as “Ginny Ma” to her younger brothers and sisters. She married John C. Grutzik on Oct. 18, 1947, in Wisconsin Rapids. The couple lived in City Point, where they raised their four children. They moved to Neillsville in 1985. John passed away on Nov. 28, 2000. Virginia’s hobbies included reading, crocheting, knitting, cooking, and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of former Martyrs Chapel Alter Society in City Point and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 153 of Pittsville.

She is survived by her children, Judith (Richard) Zabawa, Stevens Point, James (Sarah) Grutzik, City Point, Joan (David) Dix, City Point, and John “Jack” (Kathryn) Grutzik, Black River Falls; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and her siblings, Donald (Georgiane) Bentzler, Marshfield, Mary (Myron) Burkhardt, Henderson, Nev., George Bentzler, Crivitz, Leona (Irban) Aumann, Marshfield, Darlene (Richard) Lasch, South Bend, Ind., Edward (Donna) Bentzler, Rochester, N.H., Raymond (Darlene) Bentzler, Hartford, Kathleen (Ronald) Froeba, Loyal, Janet Freuhbrodt, Marshfield, and Kenneth (Holly) Bentzler, New London.

In addition to her husband, John, Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, George and Leona; a sister, Lorraine; and three brothers LaVern “Bud” Bentzler, Harold “Garland” Bentzler and Jerome Bentzler.
