Binning, Nellie (Letter from Oregon - JUN 1933)
54 Lake Place, Bend, Oregon
Dear Charlie and Lydia,
Have just received a copy of the Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) Gleaner which you
sent to me at Salem.
I was surprised and pleased to see the old paper again and really enjoyed
reading the items from the different little place, even Hemlock has a
correspondent.
I have often thought of you folks and of the nice newsy letter you sent me a
couple of years ago. I enjoyed reading the letter from Myrtle Zaffke. I didn't
know, or had forgotten, that she was a missionary. She seems to enjoy her work.
I especially enjoyed the article about the old band boys being there and playing
on the lawn at Burch's.
I saw Mabel Bishop in Salem when she was out here last summer.
We moved to Bend last October. Elmer works in one of the sawmills here. It is a
pretty little place of between 9,000 and 10,000 population. The surround country
thought is dry and much of the land is covered with sagebrush. Have to irrigate
for farming.
I like tis climate the best of anyplace I have lived. The sun shines just about
all the time here, summer and winter. Very few cloudy days and not much rain.
Our two oldest boys though, like Montana best of anyplace. They are both working
on ranches.
Where is Ralph located now, still in Great Falls, Mont.? What is the population
of Greenwood now? Has it only the one paper? No daily? You know, seeing this
paper you sent, takes me way back over the years to the time when we lived at
Hemlock and your folks lived on the farm across the river. We did have some good
times when we were all at home together and now we all regret so that we are so
far apart and feel that as we are nearing the end of life's journey, would like
to be together again.
Birdie lives in with Frankie and husband in Montana and Sadie is in Pasadena.
Neither one ever married.
Gusta and daughter came back to Everett, Wash. To live, after having spent
several years in Pennsylvania.
Eerdie and Margie have gone into the chicken business at Mondovi, Wis., also
have silver foxes.
I think probably I have scribbled enough for this time. Am not very strong and
it tires me to write much. It's my nerves. I am getting quite aged you know.
Remember me to all old friends and especially to Ethel Barr and Mabel Bishop,
and all of your folks. Shall be awfully pleased to get one of your nice long
letters.
Sincerely,
Nellie Binning
