NHS 1927 and 1928 (Reunion - 1972)
A total of 94 persons attended the combined reunion of the Neillsville High
School classes of 1927 and 1928 held Sunday evening at the Silver Dome supper
club. The gathering marked the fourth time the two groups observed a joint
anniversary.
Walter Keller, ’27, of Santa Barbara, Calif., acted as master of ceremonies. The
opening prayer was led by Mrs. Esther (Braatz) Treichler, ‘27 of Menomonee
Falls. The program also featured the reading an appropriate poem written for the
occasion by Howie Sturtz, II, and a songfest with Clarence Imislund of Eau
Claire, history teacher for both classes, at the piano.
Kenneth Ross Smith, Newhall, Ca, as the classmate coming the longest distance,
was awarded a large ceramic motorcycle and rider figurine by Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth Keach of Viola. Second and third prizes for coming the farthest distance
went, respectively to Walter Keller of Santa Barbara and Albertine Barton Goulet
of Toledo, O.
Other prizes awarded as follows: most recently married, Joe Chase and wife,
Donna (married May 14), and Alice (Hosely) Grap and husband, Jesse Spieles
(Married May 20); first registered, Richard Hemp; most recent grandchild, Harold
Slagle; door prize, Helen Poler Kapfer.
A special cake, designed as a replica of the old high school building, was baked
and decorated by Mrs. Carol Mortenson. Place cards at each setting consisted of
polished pieces of wood work salvaged from the old school, holding what appeared
to be tintype photos of the original building. An old school door carved and
scrawled with names of many former Neillsville High School students (including
member of the 1927 and ’28 classes) was on display.
Each class member present received a “ditty bag” of souvenir items donated by
city merchants. “Diplomas” containing complete address lists will be mailed to
classmates unable to attend the reunion.
