Lawrence, Ella L. (1 MAR 1860 - 8 DEC 1934)
(The Wabeno Advertiser)
Death came to Mrs. A. E. Lawrence Saturday evening, Dec, 8th, after a long life, the past thirty one years of which were spent in this community. Mrs. Lawrence had been recently troubled with a heart condition that caused her death after a few weeks’ illness.
Ella L. Glendenning was born in Fond du Lac county March 1, 1860, and grew to womanhood in her home community. Her father was a soldier who lost his life in the Civil war, and his daughter attended a school in Madison which was founded for the education of the children of the soldiers. The institution was discontinued later, the building sold and the money distributed among those who started the school.
On Sept. 5, 1878, she was united in marriage to Alton E. Lawrence at her home near Fond du Lac, and went with her husband to live at St. Cloud, where he was employed as a telegraph operator. Mr. Lawrence served as operator at various places. He was stationed at Hilbert Junction at the time the old Wisconsin Central was being built and had the work of relaying messages from Neenah-Menasha to Milwaukee, a special job necessitated by the extensive operations of building a railroad in a new country where communications were limited to the telegraph, the telephone not being then developed.
After a considerable term of service for the railroad, Mr. Lawrence went into a mercantile venture at York Center, in Clark county, and they made their home there for a number of years. Mr. Lawrence continued in the mercantile business at Loyal, and later established a bank which he conducted form seven years. The Lawrence family came to Wabeno 31 years ago and have made their home here since that time.. To them were born five children: Jessie, now Mrs. Carl Miller, Amherst, S. D., Aurel F. deceased; Marguerite, Mrs. H. A. Shambaugh, Eau Gallie, Florida; Raymond Lawrence, Fort Madison, Iowa; Mina, Mrs. Dent Dickinson, of Gatun, Canal Zone.
The funeral was held at 2 o’clock Monday at the Presbyterian church, Rev. C. E. Haskins officiating. The remains were taken to Plymouth, Wis. for burial.
Mrs. Lawrence was a woman of estimable character and her many friends and acquaintances will have only pleasant memories of her.
