James J. Tiry, 78, Willard (Rock Dam), died on Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Willard. The Rev. Joseph Follmar officiated. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Eau Claire.

James Joseph Tiry was born on April 3, 1927, in Milwaukee, to Frank and Helen (nee Schavet) Tiry. He attended school in the Milwaukee area, graduating from Washington High, Milwaukee, in 1945. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945, and served his country until his honorable discharge in 1947. He was stationed in Italy. He then attended Marquette University, and graduated in 1951, with a civil engineering degree. He married Virginia Grybcznski at St. Frederick’s Catholic Parish, Cudahy. They resided in Milwaukee, where he worked for a short time with the City of Milwaukee, and later for the City of Cudahy, as a city engineer, where he became the director of public works in 1959. They lived in Waukesha and then moved to Eau Claire in 1963. He worked at Fehr Concrete Products, as a manager of the concrete pipe plant, until his retirement in 1969. After his retirement, he built their home in Rock Dam, where they resided until his death. He greatly enjoyed reading, working in the yard, gardening, and had a great green thumb. He loved to watch his grandchildren in their various activities. He was a member of Holy Catholic Church, Willard, the Marquette Alumni Association, the Chippewa Valley Museum, was a lifetime member of the Wisconsin Chapter.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 54 years, Virginia, Willard; his children, David (Sue) Tiry, Rockland; Michael (Luz) Tiry, Bettendorf, Iowa, Ruth Tiry, West Salem, Patrick (Marialuisa) Tiry, San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, Nathan Tiry-Ortiz, Mateo Tiry-Ortiz, and Anna Tiry; one step-grandson, Angel Vidrios; one sister, Patricia (John) Stark, Indianapolis, Ind.; two nieces, Anne (Robert Young) Tiry, San Jose, Calif., and Nancy Stark, Indianapolis, Ind.; one nephew, John (Amy) Stark, Bellingham, Wash; and dear friends, Gustavo (Carrie) Pique, Darrien, Ill.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Robert Tiry; and one sister, Sister Marie Helene, O.P.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holy Family Trust Fund.

Cuddie Funeral Home, Greenwood, assisted the family with arrangements.
