(Marshfield Herald)
On last Oct. 15th, in the barroom of the Northwestern Hotel in this city, August Schroeder, a young man of perhaps 30 years of age, met with an accident that caused his death on Monday of this week. Ever since the accident he has been at St. Joseph's Hospital where everything possible was done for his recovery. Deceased was a butcher by trade and came here from Dorchester, Clark County, Wis. During the Eagles convention he worked her in the Mess & George butcher shop, but on his last visit was not employed. On the day of the accident with others at the Northwestern Hotel, he took part in a raffle for a goat. Schroeder, so it is said, somewhat under the influence of liquor, attempted to start a quarrel with one of the parties with whom he was shaking dice. Before any blows were struck he was given a shove and falling backwards, struck his head against the iron base of an upright slot machine, fracturing his skull. He was taken to St. Joseph's hospital where he has been cared for. For several weeks after the accident he was unconscious and since, until the time of his death, has remained in a semi-conscious conditon.
