Bio: Cattanach, Nina – A Tribute to Her (Sep 1978)

Those who knew Nina Cattanach through the years knew a wonderful person.

Those of us who met her in later years were often too busy to take time to know her better. She had so much knowledge, talent and goodness by which other could profit.

When the time arose to do something for posterity, Nina took up her pen as secretary of the Clark County Historical Society. The records prior to that were non-existent. She was past her 70th birthday and “senior citizen” was not a prevailing term then, but she did not hide behind her age to let someone else take up the cause. She did a magnificent job of recording the meetings for quite a few years.

The Society was organized in 1965 with a goal to preserve the 1897 Jail for historical purposes. By a quirk of Fate, her time ran out just a few weeks short of seeing that dream realized.

According to the lease, on September 15, 1978, the Society will have the opportunity to begin carrying out the plans.

----Source: Owen Enterprise (12 Sep 1978)

This coming Sunday, September 17, 1978, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the congregation; the 10th anniversary of the present church and educational facility, and the dedication of their new organ.

It was in 1890 that the early German settlers in the area began to hold regular Sunday services, served by visiting pastors. In 1903 they met to create an official congregation to carry on the work of their Lord. First services were held in what is presently the Methodist Church in Withee, and rent was $1.00 per services. In 1914 the first church building of this congregation was erected. The building cost was $3,000, half of which had to be borrowed at 3 percent interest. This building now serves the Gospel Tabernacle in Withee.

The present membership is over 680, with over 100 children enrolled in Sunday School, which is a far cry from the few families who gathered to create St. John’s Congregation in 1903.
