THORP RESIDENT IS SWEPT AWAY, KILLED BY STORM

Clark County Havoc To Farms, Highways Reaches Hugh Sum

Thorp - One person was killed, an unknown number was injured and property damage running into hundreds of thousands of dollars was caused by a tornado which swept from Minnesota and western Wisconsin across the northern Clark County area last night.

Killed in the tornado was Mrs. John Lato, 36, of the rural Thorp area, whose body was blown from her home into a nearby farm field. Wind demolished the home and other buildings on the Lato farm.

Between 8 and 8:30 o’clock last night the tornado roared through a northern Clark County area two miles wide, stretching from the Chippewa county line near here to Owen, Wis. County officials estimated that at least 40 farm buildings in the zone were completely or partly demolished.

The wind uprooted trees, damaged communication lines, disrupted power service and blew down numerous roadside sings. Rain, lashing down torrents, wrought further havoc to highway shoulders, farm buildings and highway bridge abutments. Streams and rivers in the area were swollen, spreading out in some instances a block or more beyond their banks.
