John L. Sullivan
Mr. Sullivan was born in Scotland in
1849, but came to this country and to Jackson county, Wis., with
his parents when quite young, where he lived until 1885. He was a
member of the county board in Jackson county, and the town of
Sullivan, in that County, was named in his honor. Since 1885 he has
resided in the town of Sherwood Forest, in Clark County, Wisconsin,
where he has been engaged in lumbering and farming. He is now
serving his second term as chairman of that town. Mr. Sullivan
denies being of kin to our national sluggar bearing the same name.
He served in Co. F-5th Wisconsin, Infantry during the war. Is a
member of the G. A. R., also of the Kof P. and I. O. O.

John L Sullivan of City Point has bought a tract of
land on East Fork of about 3000 acres and proposes to have it settled up with
immigrants.

John L Sullivan, a former resident of Jackson County,
after whom the town of Sullivan was named, now resides in Clark County. The
Journal is pleased to note that continued prosperity of the distinguished
recipient of the “Sullivan Letter” owns a hub and spoke factory in the town of
Sherwood Forest, Clark County and has the
foundation for a little city. He has named it Dewhurst in honor of Judge Richard
Dewhurst of Neillsville. A fine vein of iron ore has been found near there and
Mr. Sullivan expects to realize a handsome little fortune from it as soon as
developed. A representative of the Journal had the pleasure of meeting him in
Merrillan the other day and was pleased to learn that he still retained a warm
feeling for Black River Falls. As soon as John attains a modest competence he
intends to return and live with us again. His breast still swells in remembrance
of scenes that surround our little city. Jackson County Journal.

J. L. Sullivan of City Point, formerly a resident of
this town, is reportedly seriously ill with pneumonia.

----Source: July 17,1902 – John L Sullivan of City Point, died at that place of
pneumonia. He was sick about a week his death occurring on Friday July 11th. A
number of people from here attended his funeral on Saturday afternoon.

John L. Sullivan Dead – We are called upon to
chronicle the death of a long time and well known resident of Jackson County.
Most of our readers will learn with much surprise that John L Sullivan died at
his home at City Point on Friday afternoon last July 11th. It seems that he
contracted a cold when on his return home from the county convention he attended
as a delegate from the town of City Point. The cold developed into pneumonia. He
was born in Scotland in 1849 and came with his parents to this country when in
his infancy and has been a resident of Jackson County the greater portion of his
time ever since, thought he resided in the town of Sherwood Forest in Clark
County a number of years, returning to City Point a few years since. Some old
settlers will remember his father was killed in a fire accident in this city
sometime in the 50's. John served in the Civil War in Co G 5th WI. Infantry
enlisting when but fifteen years of age. After the War he was an employee of the
Banner for a few years but a number of years later went to the vicinity where he
died to engage in the work of lumbering. He served quite a few years as a member
of the county board of Clark Co. and was Chairman of his town and a member of
the Jackson County board at the time of his death and the reputation of always
faithfully representing the interests of his constituents. He leaves a wife and
several children.... Internment was had at the City Point Cemetery, where the
deceased was given the honors of the M.W.A. (Modern Woodmen of America) of which
order he was an associate member.
