Garbisch, Johanna Dorothea (6 Dec. 1844 - 7 Jan. 1936)

Johanna Dorothea Garbisch, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Schreiber, was born in Luzien, Schlesien, Germany on Dec. 6, 1844. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in her fatherland. In the year 1859 at the age of 15, she came to America with her parents, the family making their home in Milwaukee. At the age of 17, on April 15, 1861, she was united in Holy wedlock with John Garbisch of Milwaukee, with whom she was privileged to live 31 years, her husband having preceded her into eternity by 43 years, in the year 1892. This union was blessed with 14 children, six of whom have likewise preceded their mother into eternity.

In 1862 the young couple came to Clark County, settling in the town of Grant, where they purchased the tract of land, which is now farmed by her son Paul and family. Here they lived and raised their children. Here her husband died. Here she continued to make her home until the time of her death. For the past 11 years she was an invalid, the last two years she was bed ridden, unable to feed or help herself in any way.

She departed this life at three o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1936 in the faith in her Savior which she had received by baptism in infancy and to which she held fast all those years. She attained the age of 91 years, 1 month and 1 day. She leaves to mourn her death two daughters: Emma, Mrs. Clyde Campbell of Duluth, Minn.; Minnie, Ms. Minnie Osenrider of Sacramento, California. Six sons: Fred, Henry, Paul, Robert, all of Clark County; George of Rochester, Minn.; and Richard, whose address is unknown. We heard after the funeral, Richard is at Granite Falls, Minn. She also leaves 50 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church, Maple Works, Jan. 10, Rev. Laesch, officiating. Burial was made in the town of Grant Cemetery besides that her husband and daughter Lydia.
