A proposal to bury utility lines on Broadway Ave. when the street is
reconstructed in 1996 will be much more expensive than first thought
The Medford Common Council has previously approved buying the utility lines and
staggering the street lights there, but learned last week that the cost for just
the electrical service along will be approximately $555,000.
In addition, the cost to remove overhead telephone lines on Broadway and replace
them with underground lines will run about $63,000.
At last week’s Council meeting Electric Utility manager Mike Frey suggested
placing all street lights on the north side of the street, leave the maid
overhead lines on the south side, and bury the services that cross the road. He
said this would meet DOT requirements on street lighting, would be esthetically
pleasing, and would cost about $55,000.
