The Alexander Andrews Family

Alexander Andrews was b 10 Aug 1844/45 in Sumersetshire, England and came to the United States with his parents, Richard & Anna (Moon) Andrews when he was three years old.

The family came to Plymouth, Wis. and there Alexander spent his childhood.

He fought in the Civil War enlisting in Co I of 30th Wis. Inf. from 3 Dec 1863 to 20 Sep 1865. 30th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry Organized at Camp Randall, Madison, Wis., and mustered in October 21, 1862.

SERVICE - Duty at Green Bay, West Bay and other points in Wisconsin, enforcing draft, etc., till March 1863. Headquarters of Regiment at Camp Randall till December 26, 1862, then at Camp Reno, Milwaukee, Wis. Companies "D" "F," "I" and "K" ordered to St. Louis, Mo., May 2, 1863. Guard boats and supplies for Sully's Northwestern Indian Expedition up the Missouri River till August. Companies "I" and "K" ordered to Milwaukee. Companies "D" and "F" at Fann Island, and fatigue duty building Fort Sully till December 1863. Companies "E" and "G" at Bayfield and Superior City, Wis., May 26-August 21, 1863, then report to Milwaukee. Company "G" ordered to Davenport, Iowa, December 5, 1863. Company "I" moved to St. Louis, Mo., April, 1864, and thence to Fort Union, D. T., and duty there till June, 1865. Rejoined Regiment at St. Louis, Mo., June 22, 1865. Companies "A," "C," "F" and "H" left Milwaukee, Wis., April 20, 1864, to join Sully's Northwestern Indian Expedition. Moved from St. Louis to Fort Sully, D. T., thence to Fort Rice, and duty there till October. Moved to Sioux City October 12-November 2. Company "D" joins. Moved to Quincy, Ill., thence to Louisville, Ky., November 24-29. Companies "B," "E," "G" and "K" left Milwaukee for Dakota Territory April 1864. Duty at Fort Wadsworth July 1-September 29. Ordered to St. Louis, Mo., thence to relief of Paducah, Ky., October 29. Moved to St. Louis December 6-10, and join balance of Regiment. Moved to Bowling Green, Ky., December 12 and assigned to 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, and Military District of Kentucky. Moved to Louisville, Ky., January 10, 1865, and provost duty there till September; also conducting prisoners to various points. Companies "B," "E" and "G" moved to Frankfort, Ky., February, 1865, and duty there till June. Mustered out September 20, 1865.

He is also listed on the 1890 Special Veterans Census for Thorp, Clark Co, Wis.

In 1879 he married Anna Marie Hertel b 25 Oct 1859

A few years later Alexander & Anna moved to Thorp, Clark County, Wis.

The following children are listed in his obituary: Alfred Andrews of St. Marie, Idaho, Robert Andrews, Wheeler, Wis., Mrs. H. K. Lake, Crosby, Minn., Mrs. P. W. Smith, Milwaukee and Elias, Edgar, Leonard, Dewey, Mrs. T. Gulcznski, Agnes and Ray of Thorp, also one aged brother, England Fay Andrews of Wheeler, Wis.

His brother, England Andrews was also born 1840 in England. On an 1880 census for Red Cedar, Sheridan Twsp, Dunn County listed as head of household, with wife Alice, b 1850 New York and daughters Flora, b 1869; Ella, b 1873; and Hattie b 1879 all born Wis.

England was also a Civil War veteran serving in 51st/53rd WI Inf. He died in 1929 and is buried at Vanceburg Cemetery in Dunn Co, Wis.

Alexander Andrews died at his home in Thorp, Wis. on 22 Mar 1923.

Funeral services were held at the residence with the American Legion in charge and Rev F.G. Elwick, pastor of the local Community Church delivering the Memorial sermon and music provided by the choir. He is buried at the Riverside Cemetery, Withee, Clark Co, Wis.

His wife, Anna (Hertel) Andrews died 14 Oct 1946 at the age of 89 and is also buried at Riverside Cemetery near Withee, Hixon Twp, Clark County, Wis.

Also buried at the same cemetery are sons Leonard, Dewey and wife Anna and Edgar and wife Leona. There is also a Robert Andrews buried there who may be another son.

Lani Note/Mar 2006 There seem to be several families with the name Andrews in the Thorp, Clark County, Wis. area but at this time I do not think they are related to the Alexander Andrews family.
