Hahn, Bernhard Daniel (26 JAN 1932 - 18 JAN 2015)

Bernhard Daniel Hahn, 82, of Ladysmith, WI, died on January 18, 2015, at the Ladysmith Care Community.

Bernie was born January 26, 1932, in the Town of Cylon in St. Croix County WI to Carl and Martha (Henke) Hahn. The family moved to a farm near Conrath in 1936. He graduated from Tony High School in 1950. In 1952, he was drafted and entered the United States Army. He served for two years, primarily in Germany. In 1959, he married Arlene Marie Huhn of Sheldon, and they moved to Ladysmith.

Bernie’s occupation was selling and repairing radios and televisions. He worked for Fandel’s Radio and TV in Ladysmith, and Franzen’s Electronics in Cornell. He also worked at the Dairyland Power Co-Op Hydro Plant. In 1975, he and Bill Tinder purchased Fandel’s and renamed it Ladysmith Electronics. He worked there until his retirement in 1999, when the business closed. Bernie also worked part-time as a self-employed locksmith.

Bernie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheldon, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher, an Usher, and an Elder. He was a member of the Moore-Long American Legion Post 64. He played baseball for the Tony Hayshakers, and in Sheldon.

He was a very practical man who was satisfied with what he had. He did not try to outdo others (except maybe on the baseball diamond) or speak negatively about others. He did not need to be in the spotlight or be the center of attention. He just quietly went about being himself.

Bernie built furniture for his home – desks, tool boxes, bookshelves - from old TV cabinets , not because he loved woodworking or wanted to be artistic…but because he needed those things and had the ability to make them. Bernie’s other interests included photography (both taking photos and developing them in the darkroom), watching sports, genealogy, fishing, astronomy, gardening, coaching Little League baseball, and taking care of his home and his family.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Arlene; his brother David, of Fall Creek; 2 sisters, Carol (Dan) Schreiber of Ladysmith and Arlene (Irvin) Zitzelberger of Denton TX; 2 sons, Gary (Nancy) Hahn of Ladysmith, and Kevin (Amber) Hahn of Lakeville MN; 4 grandchildren, Drew Hahn of Minocqua WI, Bailee Hahn of Rhinelander WI, Alyssa Hahn of Lakeville MN, and Kyle Hahn of Lakeville MN; and 2 great-grandchildren, Liam Johnson and Gavin Johnson, both of Rhinelander WI; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, Irvin Hahn.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2015, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheldon, with the Reverend Aric Fenske officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Ladysmith Veterans Association. Visitation will be at Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday, January 26, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be held at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sheldon, WI. Nash-Jackan Funeral Home of Ladysmith is assisting with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials in Bernhard’s name may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheldon.
