Miller, William O. (28 JAN 1942 - 25 JUL 2008)

William O. Miller, 66, Medford, passed away Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield.

William was born on January 28, 1942 in Rockford, Ill., to Virgil and Dorothy (Wagner) Miller. He attended grade school in Allens Grove, then the family moved to Rib Lake where he attended the Rib Lake High School. He later moved to Beloit, where he was employed at Freeman Shoe Corp. Bill then moved to Merrill where he was employed at Semling and Meinke. His marriage to the former Shirley Holtz took place at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Medford on April 28, 1962. The couple moved to Merrill for a few months and then to Beloit where Bill was employed at Beloit Corp. and Vigh Tool and Die. After 13 years, they moved to Pocatello, Idaho where he was employed at Bucyrus-Erie as a journeyman tool machinist. About four years later, they moved to the Washburn-Ashland area where he was employed as a machinist for 27 years. In 2004 he retired and Bill and the couple moved to Medford.

Over the years, he was Sno-mo Trail director of the Rock County Sno-mo Club, where he was instrumental in acquiring and building miles of trails at the club’s onset. He was a member of the Machinist Union at Beloit Corp. In Pocatello, he was a member of the Boilermakers Union. In Ashland, Bill was a member of the Union Local 621 where he was assistant chief steward and trustee, and was also a delegate for Local 621. He was a member of the Washburn Men’s Club and the Washburn Val Heller’s Sno-mo Club where he was instrumental in building miles of trails in Bayfield County.

Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting with the Petersons, camping, snowmobiling, golf, bowling and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley, two sisters; Barbara (Tom) Gasper of Quitman, Texas, and Darlene (Roger) Ida of Fall Creek. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by aunts and uncles.
