My father Bernard D. Slota, was born, Oct.13, 1917, in Duluth, MN to Bernard Louis Slota of Thorp and Victoria (Mohr) Slota. They lived in the Morgan Park area while my grandfather worked at United Nickel. In 1927, my grandfather and his brother (John, of Thorp, Wis), bought the Gilman State.
Bernard D. Slota graduated from Gilman High School and attended Dental school at Marquette University graduating in 1942. He served in WW II as a captain in the 34th Engineer Combat Regiment.

He was given a commission in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the Dental Corp. He landed on Omaha Beach in one of the first waves and was one of six dentists that participated in the Normandy invasion. He was attached to combat engineers and crossed the Elbe with the 82nd Airborne and liberated a concentration camp at Ludwigslust Germany of the greater metropolitan region of Hamburg, a central castle town of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
