Black River Falls Public Library News

History Room has resources for researching ancestors

With the arrival of spring and the coming of summer, many people make travel plans to the communities of their ancestors.

The History Room in the Black River Falls Public Library is a wonderful resource for those travelers looking to research family information or area history.

Resources for researchers continue to be added to the shelves of the History Room. New books added include the family history of Eugene Hart, Founder of Hart Tie and Lumber Company, His Family Past and Present, written by Margaret Hart Stetzer and Valeria Hart Barton.

Mary Van Gorden also presented her latest book, The Life and Ancestry of Ellen Mary "Nellie" (McCullough) Van Gorden. Both biographies are very well done and contain a great deal of family information.

Recently, retired teacher Dick Hagen donated several junior high yearbooks. They were well received because the History Room has almost all of the annuals from the senior high, but not too many from the junior high.

The seminar on Gravestone restoration and Cleaning was held on April 1, 2006 and was well attended. Ralph and Janet Hendersin of Sparta gave a wonderful presentation on the topic. Those unable to attend the workshop can get the information that was handed out from the History Room.

Those going out to clean, and perhaps repair, some stones are asked to share their experiences with Mary Woods, the director of the History Room.

Anyone doing family research is encouraged to stop in and browse the many resources and reference materials available in the History Room. When making plans, it is recommended to call ahead for correct hours and research policies. Callers are reminded that the History Room remains open until 5 p.m., while the courthouse closes at 4:30 p.m.
