Gress, Sherman (20 Oct. 1882 - 1937)

Sherman Gress, well known for raising and moving buildings in this territory, died at his home near this city Tuesday nigh from heart disease. Sherman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gress of the town of Grant, and was born October 20, 1882. As a small boy he moved with his parents to a farm in Pine Valley, which has been his home since.

Mr. Gress continued his father’s business of house moving after the latter’s death, and built up a reputation for skillful and reliable service in his work. He included in his business farming and the selling and delivery of sand and gravel.

Sherman married Elsie Anding of Lynn, Oct. 21, 1908. Three children were born to them, Arthur, who lived in Pine Valley, Gertrude (Mrs. Herman Hagedorn of Globe), and Donald, 14, at home. There are two grandchildren. A more complete obituary will appear later.

Gress married Elsie Anding of Lynn Oct. 21, 1908, making their home on the farm. Three children were born to them: Arthur of Neillsville, Gertrude (Mrs. Herman Hagedorn), Globe; and Donald at home. Sherman was a sporty, jovial individual of small stature, well liked by children. He was a member of the IOOF, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. Besides the wife and family, one adopted brother, Will Gress of Tacoma, and two grandchildren survive, Robert and Lowell Gress. Services were held at the home and from the M. E. Church Sept. 4, Rev. E. P. Stone officiating. The Odd Fellows lodge took charge of the burial, and attended rites in a body.
