Payne, Caroline (July 9, 1863 - April 22, 1947)
Mrs. Raymond S (Caroline) Payne passed away Tuesday, April 22, 1947, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leah Pickett, Black River Falls, where she had been staying since April 10th of last year. She had been in failing health for the past year but confined to her bed for about two months, suffering of hardening of the arteries. Death was due to a heart attack. Mrs. Payne would have been 85 years of age next July.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday with a service at the Co-op Funeral Home, with the Rev. Winslow Wilson officiating. Interment was made in the Garden Valley Cemetery. Services were largely attended and all of the members of her family were here.
Caroline Jane Hayden was born July 9, 1862, in Dane County, MN. She was married August 22, 1880, at Sylvan, Richland County, WI, to the late Raymond S Payne who preceded her in death January 18, 1947. They moved to a farm in Garden Valley in 1914 and lived there until moving to Alma Center recently.
Mrs. Payne is survived by six daughters and one son: Emma, Mrs. P. M. Cranston, Rochester, MN; Belle, Mrs. Pete Herried, Alma Center; Dessa, Mrs. Frank Short, Neillsville; Grace, Mrs. A. M. Cray, Cannon Falls, MN; Irving Payne, Alma Center; Lillian, Mrs. A. C. Squires, Humbird, and Mrs. Leah Pickett, of Black River Falls; 38 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died three months ago, and a son Wesley.
Mrs. Payne was a most loving mother and will be sadly missed by her children and their children, as well as by all that knew her. She was a member of the Christian church, a kindly neighbor and friend to all who knew her. She had many friends.
Among those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Archie Cray, of St. Claire, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Clarke, of Mankato, MN; Mrs. Carl Kukuzke of Stewartville, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Payne and children of Granton; Mrs. Verna Payne and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Short and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pool, of Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Myron Payne of Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Louie Matousek and Rodger Short, of Milwaukee; Mrs. Raynor Vaughn, of Minneapolis, MN; Mrs. Breitenbach, Mrs. Dunlap, Mrs. Vera Troxel and son Vernon, and Mr. and Mrs. Forest Troxel, of Alma Center; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Troxel of Augusta.
