Short, Dessa A. (September 6, 1885 - January 19, 1983)
Dessa A Short who made her home in the Town of Washburn for many decades, passed away in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, January 19, 1983. She was 97 and a resident of Memorial Home for the past seven years.
Mrs. Short was born on September 6, 1885, in Sylvan to Raymond and Caroline (Hayden) Payne. She received her education in Richland County schools and in schools of the Town of Washburn.
On January 30, 1907, she married Frank Short in Town of Washburn ceremonies. The couple farmed there until his death in late 1958. She continued to live on the farm for several years and then moved into Neillsville, Wis. Seven years ago, due to failing health, she became a resident of Memorial Home.
Surviving Dessa are her two sons, Kenneth of Neillsville and Roger of West Allis; two daughters, Mrs. Louis (Helen) Matousek of Lewisville, TX and Mrs. Alvin (Marie) Birch of Bethesda, MD; a sister, Mrs. Leah Pickett, Kokomo, IN; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death, besides her husband, by two brothers, Wesley and Irving; and four sisters, Emma Cranston, Belle Herried, Grace Cray, and Lillian Squires.
Funeral services were held from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville on Saturday afternoon, January 22, 1983, with the Rev. Howard Ott of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery with Keith, Ken, Jr., Jeff and Craig Short and Earl Payne and Richard Matti as pallbearers.
