Thompson, Thelma Juanita (6 Jan. 1916 - 21 Aug. 2005)

COLBY - Thelma Thompson, 89, Abbotsford, died on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at the Colonial Center in Colby.

Funeral services for Thelma will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at the Community Alliance Church in Withee, with the Rev. Tom Gonzales and the Rev. Ron Clausen officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation with family and friends will be on Thursday at the Community Alliance Church, from 11 a.m. until time of services.

Thelma Juanita Markeland was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Blue Earth, Minn., the first child of Olaus and Polly (Erickson) Markeland. She graduated from Blue Earth High School, and on July 20, 1935, Thelma and Herbert Thompson were united in marriage. They farmed in the town of Maplehurst until 1954. They moved to the town of Hixon and farmed until 1964, then moved to Owen, Wis. Herbert died Nov. 1, 1985.

Thelma was then married to Douglas Braithwait on June 1, 1996, in Withee. After the death of Douglas on Dec. 17, 2000, Thelma resided at the Abbotsford Valley Crest Apartments.

Thelma was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, embroidering pillow cases and towels and making jelly and applesauce from her crabapple tree. She was a very active member of the Alliance Church. She taught Sunday School for many years, was Sunday School superintendent one year and was involved with the Christian and Missionary Alliance Women for 40 years as president. Thelma was a loveable lady and good friend to all.

Thelma will be dearly missed by her loving children, Beverly (Chauncey) Bailey of Santa Barbara, Calif., Ruth Rose of Lakeland, Fla., Caroline (Donald) Pietrowski of Colby, Carole Briggs of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kathleen (Jerold) Surges of Pulaski, and John (Lynda) Thompson of Milwaukee; 20 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two sisters, Martha Hentschel of Clifton, Colo., and Madeleine Naumann, of Brewster, Minn.; two brothers, Orville (Emily) Markeland of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Paul Markeland of Colgate.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Herbert Thompson and Douglas Braithwait; two grandchildren, Tammy Pietrowski and Tim Pietrowski; and a son-in-law, Robert Briggs.

Maurina/Community Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.
