100 Years Ago (1906)

Anton Micke is hauling building material for a large new residence, which he contemplates building on his farm in the Town of Worden next spring. Louis Kolb is also getting material on the ground for a new residence to be erected on his acre lot adjoining H. Holzhausen’s property in this village.

C. F. Rainey of the local telephone company went to Cadott to attend a meeting of directors of the Bell and Yellow River system of lines, with a view of making arrangements for making connection with the local line here.

The 1906 World Almanac and Encyclopedia is on sale all over the United States. It is a volume of nearly seven hundred pages and sells for 25¢. Sent by mail for 35¢.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Announcement has been made by J. L. Hewitt of the remodeling of what formerly was the Lee Snyder building, in order to produce a thoroughly modern and up to date place for the best type of variety store.

Someone entered the Roger Creek school house and stole $2.85 belonging to the Children’s Club.

50 Years Ago (1956)

The eighth annual Ice Carnival sponsored by the American Legion and generously supported by Thorp businessmen was successfully held Saturday, January 21st at the City Skating Rink with 40 contestants participating, despite zero weather conditions. The competition for Ice King and Queen was very keen. Judges chose Dale Ebben and Faye Rusch as King and Queen based on their all around skating ability.

Work at the Stanley Division of the Acme Steel Company, which employees a goodly number of Thorp area residents, was at a halt as pickets marched around the plant on Hwy. 29 at the southeast edge of Stanley.

Richard H. Giese, Withee, was named by the Clark County Law Enforcement Committee as county traffic officer to succeed Lorris Dusso, recently resigned.

The appointment of Burke B. Piper, a former assistant director of audits for the General Accounting Office, as treasurer of the Grace Line was announced. Mr. Piper is the son of Mrs. Roy Piper of Thorp and is a graduate of the Thorp High School.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Betty Jo Abramowicz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Abramowicz, Thorp, won the junior division of the 1980 Wisconsin Conservation and Environmental Awareness Speaking Contest for Clark County.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Boy Scout Michael Murphy of Thorp gathers with other Scouts to hear Dan Winrich teach winter safety techniques at their winter camping trip, the Klondike.

It took 60 years of attending the Clark County Fair at Neillsville for Pink Van Gordon, Neillsville businessman, to win his first blue ribbon for fair participation.

The Thorp high School classroom known as the business education lab was equipped with typewriters and adding machines before school district administrator Gerald Eichman was hired in 1994. His technology initiative at the high school exchanged those typewriters for 18 new Pentium computers, IBM’s leading microcomputer.
