Mrs. Phoebe Shapely died at the home of her daughter ,Mrs A Boyer in the town of Brighton, Sept 7th, 1903 of a complication of deseases (diseases) due to old age, she having attained the ripe age of 83 years.

Mrs. Phoebe Shapely was born in Oneida Co New York Oct 10th 1820. In 1854 she was married to William Shapely and removed to Calumet county, then to Unity in 1878.

Four children were born to them two of whom are living: Mrs. Marie Boyer of the town of Brighton and Mrs. Warren Skeesuck of Prentice. Her husband died in 1893 and since then she has made her home with her daughter where she died.

The deceased was highly respected by a large circle of friends, she was a true Christian in thought and up to the last few years was one of the most faithful attendants at the M.E. Church of which she was a member.

During the past year she has been confined almost entirely to her bed, awaiting patiently for His call, and when it came she bade her dear ones good bye and her spirit went peacefully home.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. E. G. Vischer, and the remains laid in Unity cemetery.

Researcher’s Note - Phoebe Shapely was my great-great- great grandmother. Here are my records on Phoebe Shapely and her family. She was full -blooded Brothertown Indian.

Phoebe Johnson married William Harris Shapely, in 1854 and he was born July 12,1810 in Devonshire, England. He at age 51 served in the Civil War as a teamster for Co I 5th WI Infantry. He died on March 21,1893. Both Phoebe and William and daughters Ruth Shelley, and Almira (Marie) Boyer and her husband, Allen Boyer, and their sons, and daughter Minnah's infant daughter are all buried at Unity Township Cemetery.
