Walter R. Wirkuty, 78, Loyal, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at his son’s residence on County Road K, Loyal. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug 23, at Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, Wis. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Neillsville Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Loyal American Legion Post #175.
Walter Robert Wirkuty was born on July 10, 1928, in Pewaukee, to Anton and Mae (nee Blood) Wirkuty. He attended Lincoln School in the town of York and Loyal High School. He married Maureen Freezy on Dec. 8, 1951, in Neillsville, Wis. They farmed in the Pittsville, Chili, Arpin, and Thorp areas and on County Road K in Neillsville, Wis. Since 1999, he and his wife have owned and operated the Loyal Drive-In. He was a member of the Loyal American Legion Post #175.
Survivors include his wife, Maureen; two sons, Justin (Suzette) Wirkuty, Mobridge, S.D., and Doug (Melinda) Wirkuty, Loyal; eight grandchildren including step-grandchildren; two brothers, Leland (Gloria) Wirkuty, Neillsville, and Alvin (Alice) Wirkuty, Neillsville, Wis.
Preceding him in death were his daughter, Toni Jane; his parents; a brother, Harold; and various nephews and nieces.
Gesche Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
