Crandall, Kate (6 May 1858 - 2 Dec. 1938)
Mrs. Kate Montgomery Crandall passed away Friday, December 2, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Wood at Neopit, Wisconsin, after two weeks illness following a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mrs. Crandall was born at Farmington, Wisconsin, to Esther and Robert Montgomery, May 6, 1858, and was therefore 80 years, 6 months and 26 days of age.
On January 21, 1881, she was united in marriage to Nelson E. Crandall and made her home in Clark County for fifty years, the Crandall homestead being the farm just west of the Black River Bridge on highway 10, now a part of the Indian mission.
Two sons, Eugene, Granton and Bert of Portland, Oregon, and one daughter, (Hazel) Mrs. Will Wood of Neopit, were born to them. There are four grandchildren, Theodore and Douglas Crandall and Robert and Dorothy Wood. She is also survived by a brother, George, Portland, Oregon, and a sister, Mrs. Alma Paynter, Madison.
Mrs. Crandall was a splendid homemaker and a delightful friend and neighbor. She was active in church and lodge work, being a member of the Eastern Star and W. R. C.
When Mr. Crandall’s health failed and he was no longer able to operate the farm, they moved to Neillsville and established themselves in the restaurant business and for eleven years this was Neillsville’s most popular eating place, the food served being excellent at all times and the rooms were cleanly and attractive. Her charming manner and excellent managing ability made her a most gracious hostess.
Funeral rites were held at the Schiller Funeral home Monday afternoon, December 5, at 2 o’clock with Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.
Relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral were:
Mr. and Mrs. Wood and son, Robert, Neopit; Mrs. Eugene Crandall and sons, Douglas and Theodore, Granton; Mrs. Alma Paynter, Mrs. Esther Risley, Mrs. Katherine Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Paynter of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Orin Hickcox, Hudson; Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Robson, Neopit, and Mrs. Mort Nichols, Oshkosh.
