Zerbel, Herman (3 FEB 1853 - 8 FEB 1927)

Herman Zerbel, who passed away suddenly Thursday morning, Feb. 3, 1927, was born in Germany on Jan. 7th, 1853. He came to America with the family in 1866, settling at Honey Creek, Sauk Co., Wis. He attended Naperville College and then taught school in Sauk County for a number of terms. In his youth he was converted to God, and joined the Evangelical Church, remaining a consistent Christian throughout his life.

Mr. Zerbel was married at Honey Creek, on Dec. 28, 1877, to Miss Dorothea Schultz, and to this union seven children were born, two of whom have preceded their father in death. Surviving are the widow, and five children, namely: Louis of Madison; Paul, Martin and Mrs. Ella Zimmerman of Humbird; and Mrs. Anna Accola of Prairie du Sac.

In 1901 the family moved from Sauk County to Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.), locating on the Nelson Colburn farm, where they resided until 1917, when they erected the residence in the village which has since been their home.

Mr. Zerbel was one of the leading citizens of this community, and was active in its affairs until the infirmities of advancing age caused his retirement. He served several years on the town board of supervisors, until replaced by a younger man at his own request. He was one of a family of four brothers and three sisters, all of whom are deceased.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon and were attended by a large congregation of sorrowing friends. Rev. Geo. Reichert, Evangelical pastor from Augusta, and Rev. L.L. Litchfield, conducted the services. The remains were taken to Denzer that night, where burial services were held on Sunday, and interment was made in the cemetery at the church.

Accompanying the remains to their final resting place were the bereaved widow, sons Paul and Martin, and daughter and husband, Mrs. and Mrs. R.H. Zimmerman. Mr. Kretschmer also went to Denzer with the funeral party. A host of friends in this vicinity extend their sympathies to those who mourn the death of a kind husband and an affectionate father.
