Szymoniak, Wanda Marie (April 28, 1919 - December 3, 2004)

Wanda M. Szymoniak, age 85, of Thorp, died at Oakbrook Health & Rehab, in Thorp, on Friday, December 3, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp, Fr. Donald Wilger officiated and burial followed in New St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was held at Thorp Funeral Home on Monday, December 6, 2004, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. rosary service.

Wanda Marie O’Konski was born on April 28, 1919, in butternut, WI, the daughter of Joseph and Cecelia (Lewandowski) O’Konski. As a young child, her family moved to the Junction area, where Wanda was raised on a farm and received her education. She moved to Chicago, after completing her education, and worked as a housekeeper and a waitress. Wanda was united in marriage to Edward Wynimko on November 21, 1942 in Chicago. They moved back to Junction and took over the Wynimko family farm. Her husband, Edward, died on January 13, 1973.

Wanda moved to Thorp, where she worked as a nurses’ assistant at Oakbrook Health & Rehab. On May 30, 1981, Wanda was united in marriage to Stanley Szymoniak at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin. They resided in Thorp, and later moved to Morgan Plaza in the fall of 2001. Her husband, Stanley, died on September 25, 2004. Wanda was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church and enjoyed flower gardening, spending time with her family and friends, cooking and crocheting.

She is survived by two daughters: Diane Brodbeck of Green Bay; Nancy Ehrlichmann of La Crosse; one son, Joe Wynimko of Bloomer; one step-daughter: Sonja Peters of Wood Dale, IL; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands.
