Trachsel, Jacob (24 JAN 1880 - 7 OCT 1928)

After three weeks of intense suffering, Jacob Trachsel passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, at an early hour Sunday morning. It was known for several days that he could not recover, and the members of the family were at his bedside when the final summons came.

The remains were brought home by Undertaker Kretschmer, and funeral services were held at St. John’s Church Wednesday afternoon, Revs. E.F. Menger and J. Stucki officiating. Many friends were present at the last sad rites, and the Odd Fellows and Rebecca Lodges attended to a body. The beautiful floral designs betokened the esteem with which the deceased was held by all.

He was laid to rest in Mentor Cemetery on Oct. 10th, 1928, the burial services of the Odd Fellows’ order being given at the grave.

The following sketch was read by the pastor at the burial service:

Jacob Trachsel was born in Canton Berne, Switzerland, on Jan. 24, 1880. He attended the Volksschule in Switzerland on Good Friday, 1895, was confirmed in the Reformed Church at Muesingen, the class having just 100 members. In the beginning of this century he came to this country as a cheesemaker, and settled near Brodhead, Wis. In 1904 he went back to Switzerland, where he was married to Miss Rosetta Aebersold, on Feb. 26th. And in the spring of that year returning to the United States, this time settling near Argyle, Wis., where he was cheesemaker until 1912, when he, with his family, moved to Clark County on a farm near Humbird, where he lived until the Angel of Death called him yonder.

While living in the southern part of the state, he helped organize and was a charter member of the Reformed Church at Postville. When he came to Humbird, the little Reformed congregation was just ready to erect a new building, which is the one from which he is being buried today. He showed great interest in the work and was a hard worker. A few weeks ago he was very active in having the church re-decorated, and before the work was finished the call came to come to his final home.

Mr. Trachsel was also active in community affairs. He was interested in the school as well as active in other ways. He was manager of the Humbird Cheese Co. for the last four years.

On May 17t, 1923, he was initiated into the Odd Fellows Lodge, Humbird lodge No. 41, and went through the chairs and became past grand on July 15th, 1926. He was also a charter member of the Rebecca lodge No. 222 of Humbird. He was an active member of both orders.

The first week in September 1918, he attended the sessions of Northwest Synod at Waukesha, as a representative of his church. In January 1919 he was elected as elder of his church, the highest office his church could bestow on him. This office he very ably filled until the day of his death, Oct. 7th, 1927. His mission on this earth was fulfilled when he (the rest of my copy was cut off)
