Local Happenings
Peter Erickson, crossing watchman at a Merrillan crossing, was killed by a hit and run driver just before going off duty Sunday afternoon. No one saw the accident and there is no clue to the identity of the guilty driver.
The last person seeing him alive was a brakeman on a passing freight. It is presumed he was hit as he was leaving his post after the train passed.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. M. Kretschmer’s hearse carried the remains to the Swedish chapel in West Garden Valley for burial.
Mr. Erickson was 66 years of age, and was assigned to the crossing job after losing an eye in the railway service.
