Smith, Oscar C. (? - 21 Sept. 1939)

Oscar C. Smith, a resident of Granton and South Romadka for nearly 23 years, passed away at the hospital at Carlinville, Ill., September 21, where he had been a patient since September 17.

He was born in Morgan County, Ill., and grew to manhood in the counties of Green and Morgan. He then went to East St. Louis as an electrician and worked there and in Alton, Ill., for a number of years. In 1913 he was married to Mrs. Myrtle Beiser of Alton, and to this union were born four children: Mrs. Robert Montgomery (Pauline), of Greenfield, Ill.; Harold, of New Richmond, Wis.; Melvin, at home; and Glen, of Lincoln, Ill.; all of whom survive him. He is also survived by three brothers, three sisters and two grandchildren.

He had been in poor health since last January at which time he entered the Madison Hospital for the removal of a tumor on the side of his face. He returned there several time for treatment and was discharged September 4. For a time after returning home, he was in better health than for some time, but on September 10 he was taken suddenly ill.

The family moved to Greenfield, Ill., last March, and he lived with his step-daughter, Mrs. Harold Lavey until the last of April when he made his second trip to Madison General Hospital, then to join the family at Greenfield.

Burial took place in the Alton Cemetery Saturday, September 23.
