Zerkle, Alice R. (23 Oct. 1883 – 11 Jan. 1940)

Crushed beneath the wheels of her son’s car, Mrs. Alice (Ring) Zerkle, 56, of Yucaipa, California, passed away January 11, in an ambulance on the way to Redlands (Calif.) Community Hospital, a few minutes after crashing with another car.

Mrs. Zerkle was born in Neillsville, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Ring, in the home which stood at the corner now occupied by the Masonic Temple.

She attended the Neillsville schools, Hillcrest School for girls at Spring Green and Milwaukee Downer College. Aside from the time spent at college, Mrs. Zerkle lived at her home here until she was married to Earl Zerkle in 1908, the wedding taking place in the old home. They went to Fort Atkinson to reside. They had three children: William R., John Austin, and Alice Elizabeth, all of whom were born in that city.

In 1924, the family moved to Hollywood, Calif., and a year later they located on a ten-acre chicken ranch at Yucaipa Valley, ten miles southeast of Redlands, which had since been their home.

For the Press "Old Home Town Letter Album," published June 26, 1936, Mrs. Zerkle responded with a most interesting letter, so typical of the lovely young Alice during her happy youth and young womanhood, and proving that the harder years of raising a family, hard work on their ranch, her own frail health and the long illness of her husband, had not marred her happiness. Her letters to old friends too, were always cheerful; she rejoiced much over the accomplishments of her children.

She is survived by her husband and children, by two sisters; Mrs. Victor Huntzicker, Milwaukee, and Miss Ethel Ring who teachers in St. Louis.

Burial arrangements had not been made at the time the notice of her death was sent to Neillsville friends.

*Alice’s birth date was taken from the California Death Index. It list her mother’s maiden name as Austin.

This is the first time I have read this. I am the granddaughter of Alice Ring Zerkle and John's daughter. Any further information regarding my father's family would be greatly appreciated. Or please let me know where I can find out more. Thanks!!  Paula, zerkle@gmail.com

Paula, I am one of many volunteers who transcribes for the Clark Co., Wis. Internet Library. I just happened to do this one.

I am sorry, but I have no connections with this family line.  Crystal Wendt, crystal@wiclarkcountyhistory.org
