Yankee, Herman (17 July 1851 - 19 Nov. 1940)

Herman Yankee, a pioneer resident of the town of Lynn, died at his home in that town on the evening of November 19, 1940, at the age of 89 years, four months, and two days. He had been confined to his bed for the past two weeks, and was in poor health for some time.

Mr. Yankee was born July 17, 1851, at Cederburg, in Washington County. On June 6, 1858, when he was five years of age, he came to the town of Lynn with his parents and here received his early education and training in a pioneer school.

In his young manhood he worked in the lumber camps and on log drives. In later years he died some contract logging for William Price on O’Neil Creek.

Mr. Yankee was a surveyor and died the surveying for laying out the roads in the town and also died boundary line surveying for new settlers.

He also served his town as chairman, supervisor and assessor for a number of years.

Herman Yankee was married October 11, 1875, to Miss Louise Richards of Sparta, who preceded him in death 12 years ago, December 6. To this union were born three sons and three daughters, namely: Otto F. Yankee, of the town of Lynn; Otelia (Mrs. Herman Wagner), Chippewa Falls; Amanda (Mrs. J. M. King) Denver, Col.; Carl, Amos and Lydia (Mrs. Chas. Anding), are at home. Surviving are also 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the home Saturday, Rev. G. W. Longenecker, Congregational pastor, officiating. Interment took place in the Lynn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Otto, Carl and Amos Yankee, Gilbert Yankee, Harlow Hanson and Reginold Wagner, Mrs. Gilbert Yankee and Mrs. Harlow Hanson carried the flowers.

Thos from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. William Terman, and Mr. and Mrs. August Arndt, Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Yankee, Rhinelander; Hubert Yankee, Butternut; Mrs. Kenneth Dane, Park Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Wagner, and son, Reginold, Chippewa Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Verne Howard, Grant; Mr. and Mrs. Harlow Hanson, Nasonville.
