Esther Smith

NEILLSVILLE -- Esther Elsie Smith, age 98, of Neillsville, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at the Memorial Medical Center in Neillsville, Wis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville, Wis. Interment will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Augusta.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Gesche Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Esther was born Oct. 13, 1908, at home in the town of Clear Creek, Eau Claire County, to Edward and Marie (Henning) Marten. She was united in marriage to Carl R. Smith on Nov. 24, 1927, in Augusta. They lived their entire life in the Augusta, Humbird, Fairchild, Neillsville and Granton areas, where they farmed and raised their family. Carl died May 15, 1967. After his death, Esther did some baby-sitting and also cared for a couple of elderly people in the Neillsville area.

She is survived by one daughter, Arlys (Ervin) Knoop of Neillsville; three sons, Kenneth (Marilyn) Smith and Gordon (Mary) Smith, both of Stevens Point, and Carl R. (Betty) Smith Jr. of Vesper; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren.
