Vernon J. Wegner, age 72, of Newton, Iowa, died at Careage of Newton in Newton on January 25, 2007. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday January 27, 2007 at Newton Union Cemetery-Veterans Section. Tammy Norcross, minister, officiated and burial followed at Newton Union Cemetery-Veterans Section.
Vernon John Wegner was born on May 31, 1934, in Thorp, WI, to John F. and Mary V. (Jarocki) Wegner. He grew up in Thorp, WI, and was a graduate of Thorp High School and Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. He also lived in St. Paul, MN, and Withee, WI. Vernon served his country in the U. S. Army from 1958-1960, stationed in Germany. He worked as a biochemist and farmer, retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp, WI and Kansas State University Alumni.
He is survived by his mother, Mary V. Wegner of Newton, IA; one brother, Ed (Elizabeth) Wegner of Newton, IA; one nephew, John (Teri) Wegner of Springfield, IL; one niece, Beverly (Steve) Fritz of Omaha, NE; and two great-nieces, Meghan Wegner of Springfield, IL and Riley Ann Fritz of Omaha, NE.
He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters: Gertrude Wegner and Vivianne Malecki.
Memorials to Newton Union Cemetery to be used for projects in the Veterans Section or the VA Hospital in Knoxville may be left at the funeral home.
Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa, assisted the family with arrangements.
